Daniels County, MT and the Bakken Shale Play
Daniels County (1,427 sq miles) is located in northern Montana and sits atop the Bakken Shale play.
In 2012, Apache Corp. entered the Bakken when it acquired a 300,000 net acrea position in Daniels County. Apache officials seemed pleased with initial well tests, but the company has since shifted away from the Bakken and other resource plays.
Currently, only one operator is active in Daniels, and it is one of the lowest oil producing counties in our North Dakota-Montana Bakken county coverage area. Annual oil production peaked in the county in 1991, with 286,833 bbls of oil produced.
There are no active pipeline companies in Daniels County.
The largest Daniel's County cities are Scobey and Flaxville. Scobey is the largest city in the county and serves as the county seat. County services of interest to oil and gas lease owners include the Daniels County Appraisal District (tax collector) office and the Daniels County Clerk (property records) office.
