Dawson County, MT and the Bakken Shale Play
Dawson County (2,383 sq miles) is located in eastern Montana and sits atop the Bakken-Lodgepole Total Petroleum System (TPS).
The county encompasses three oil fields: Gas City Oilfield, Glendive and North Pine. Production from the Siluro Ordovician and Red River formations have been reported in all of these fields. Production from the Madison formation has also been reported in the North Pine Field.
Oil production in Dawson County began shooting up at the beginning of the Bakken boom. In 2013, the county had annual production of 279,971 bbls.
The largest city and county seat of Dawson is the city of Glendive. Other Dawson communities include the town of Richey, and West Glendive. County services of interest to oil and gas lease owners include the Dawson County Appraisal District (tax collector) office and the Dawson County Clerk (property records) office.
