McLean County, ND and the Bakken Shale Play
McLean County (2,328 sq. miles) is located in North Dakota and sits atop the Bakken Shale play. It is one of 16 active oil & gas producing counties in our North Dakota coverage area, but is outside the core area for production.
McLean County didn't have any measurable production until the early 1990s. Production rose to peak levels at the beginning of the Bakken boom, hitting total monthly oil production of 161,135 bbls or 5,197 b/d in July, 2012. Activity is far slower in McLean County compared to neighboring western counties of Dunn and Mountrail.
The largest cities in McLean include Benedict, Butte, Coleharbor, Garrison, Max, Mercer, Riverdale, Ruso, Turtle Lake, Underwood, Washburn, and Wilton. Garrison is the largest city in the county. The city of Washburn serves as the county seat.
