Ward County, ND and the Bakken Shale Play
Ward County (2,056 sq. miles) is located in North Dakota and sits atop the Bakken Shale play. It is one of 16 active oil & gas producing counties in our North Dakota coverage area, but is outside the core area for production.
According to the North Dakota Geological Survey (NDGS), production in the county comes primarily from the Mississippian Madison Group. The geology of Stark is similar to Renville, its northern neighbor.
Ward County didn't have any consistent production until the early 1960s. In the late 1980s the county saw a spike in oil production, with total monthly oil production peaking at 45,272 bbls (1,460 b/d) in August, 1988. Today, Ward County is one of the lowest oil producing counties in our coverage area.
The county seat of Ward County is Minot. Other cities in the county include Berthold, Burlington, Carpio, Des Lacs, Donnybrook, Douglas, Kenmare, Makoti, Ryder, Sawyer, and Surrey. County services of interest to oil and gas lease owners include the Ward County Appraisal District (tax collector) office and the Ward County Clerk (property records) office.
