Williams County, ND

Williams County (2,148 sq. miles) is located in North Dakota and sits atop the Bakken Shale play. It is the first county in which oil was discovered in the state, and today makes up one of four core oil producing counties in North Dakota.

In addition to the Bakken Shale, oil is also produced in the eastern part of the county from the Cambrian Deadwood and Mississippian Madison Formation, along the Nesson anticline, according to the North Dakota Geological Society (NDGS).

The largest cities in Williams County include Alamo, Epping, Grenora, Ray, Springbrook, Tioga, Wildrose, and Williston. Williston is the largest city in the county and serves as the county seat. County services of interest to oil and gas lease owners include the Williams County Appraisal District (tax collector) office and the Williams County Clerk (property records) office.
